Wolfgang Loitzl wins qualification in Engelberg

Veteran Wolfgang Loitzl won the qualification in Engelberg Friday afternoon. The Austrian took the win ahead of Klemens Muranka and Thomas Diethart.

With 138 m, Wolfgang Loitzl showed the longest jump of the round and captured the first place with his total of 145.4 points. Klemens Muranka of Poland jumped on 134.5 m and came in second with 144.6 points. Thomas Diethart, the new face on the Austrian team, was third with 135 m and 142.4 points.

The fourth place was shared by Norwegian Anders Fannemel and Jakub Janda of the Czech Republic. The sixth place went to Slovenia's Peter Prevc. Janne Ahonen came in seventh and was the only one of the three Finnish athletes who could qualify for the competition.

The best jumper of the German team in this qualification was Andreas Wank as eighth. Also Karl Geiger, Michael Neumayer and Pius Paschke will get the chance to comepte on Saturday. For Paschke this will be the debut in the World Cup, he took the place of Richard Freitag on the German team. Freitag cannot compete in Engelberg due to a periostitis of the left ankle.

Four athletes will represent the Swiss team in the competition. Besides Simon Ammann, also Gregor Deschwanden, Pascal Kaelin and Marco Grigoli will get the chance to compete in front of their home crowd. Martin Koch of Austria could also qualify for the competition in his first appearance in the World Cup this winter.

The best jumps of the ten already pre-qualified athletes were shown by Anders Bardal of Norway (136 m), Poland's Piotr Zyla (136 m) and Gregor Schlierenzauer (135 m).
