Jason Lamy Chappuis to carry
flag for French Olympic Team
French Nordic Combined star Jason Lamy Chappuis
has been chosen to carry the French flag in the
opening ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games in
Sochi (RUS). The announcement was made by the French
Olympic Committee on 14th October 2013.
The 27-year-old is the first Nordic Combined athlete
since Fabrice Guy to receive the honour for France.
Guy carried the flag in the 1992 Olympics in Albertville
in his home country.
Lamy Chappuis, Olympic gold medallist from Vancouver
2010 (CAN) and four-time FIS World Champion was
picked over several successful French Olympic athletes
including Brian Joubert (figure skating) and Ophelie
David (ski cross). He follows biathlete Vincent
Defrasne and fencer Laura Flessel who carried the
French flag in the opening ceremonies of the 2010
Vancouver and 2012 London Olympics.
“It’s a great honour for me to be chosen,” said
Chappuis. “It means a lot to me I learned to ski
and jump in France and I feel French above all (despite
having an American mother). I remember when Fabrice
Guy carried the French Flag in Albertville. He became
Olympic Champion there. I hope I can do the same.”
